Helsinki, Finland – Startup Sauna program is going back to Russia. This is the third time that the exciting seed accelerator program is meeting entrepreneurs & Startups from Russia.
There is a new city of the list, its the first time that the Startup Sauna is going to Krasnodar and the second time that St Petersburg and Moscow will be visited.
“We are going to Krasnodar because we want to help develop local entrepreneurial ecosystem and explore dynamics of south region, home for 23+ million of people” explains Ville Simola, the Captain of Startup Sauna “That city is already linked with many international startups including HeiaHeia from Finland.”
Startup Sauna, founded in 2010, open sources seed acceleration for the most promising startups in Northern Europe, Baltics and Russia. The aim to increase the quality and volume of deal flow to attract investors, talent into the region and then push them back to make an impact in their own countries.
In every city there is a local partner that works with the Startup Sauna in attracting the startups. In St. Petersburg, the organizing partner is QD, in Moscow it is Digital October with HSE and in Krasnodar it is RSUTE Krasnodar Branch.
Organized twice a year, Startup Sauna has helped these early stage startups raise over 8,2€ million in funding and screened more than 500 startups as of December 2011. The acceptance rate to the program is about 8%. 20 startups are selected to each batch and about 10-12 of them actually graduate from Startup Sauna. Last Startup Sauna, 3 Russian teams were admitted to the program.
The program’s success is showcased by Russian company Maxygen that placed in the top 3 winners of the last Startup Sauna. Maxygen produces inexpensive DNA tests which allows general physicians to detect infectious diseases such as HIV and tuberculosis. Their prototype performs DNA test in 15 minutes compared to 2-3 hours which is the industry average. http://maxygen.ru/
